چکیده

Iterative decoding and linear programming decoding are guaranteed to converge to the maximum-likelihood codeword when the underlying Tanner graph is cyclefree. Therefore, cycles are usually seen as the culprit of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. In this paper, we argue in the context of graph cover pseudocodeword that, for a code that permits a cycle-free Tanner graph, cycles have no effect on error performance as long as they are a part of redundant rows. Specifically, we characterize all parity-check matrices that are pseudocodeword-free for such class of codes.

Eigenvalue bounds on the pseudocodeword weight of expander codes

Four different ways of obtaining low-density parity-check codes from expander graphs are considered. For each case, lower bounds on the minimum stopping set size and the minimum pseudocodeword weight of expander (LDPC) codes are derived. These bounds are compared with the known eigenvalue-based lower bounds on the minimum distance of expander codes. Furthermore, Tanner’s parity-oriented eigenva...

Which Codes Have Cycle-free

If a linear block code C of length n has a Tanner graph without cycles, then maximum-likelihood soft-decision decoding of C can be achieved in time O(n 2). However, we show that cycle-free Tanner graphs cannot support good codes. Specically, let C be an (n;k;d) linear code of rate R = k=n that can be represented by a Tanner graph without cycles. We prove that if R 0:5 then d 2, while if R < 0:5...

Which codes have cycle-free Tanner graphs?

If a linear block code C of length n has a Tanner graph without cycles, then maximum-likelihood soft-decision decoding of C can be achieved in time O(n). However, we show that cycle-free Tanner graphs cannot support good codes. Specifically, let C be an (n, k, d) linear code of rate R = k/n that can be represented by a Tanner graph without cycles. We prove that if R ≥ 0.5 then d ≤ 2, while if R...

Codes and Decoding on General Graphs

Iterative decoding techniques have become a viable alternative for constructing high performance coding systems. In particular, the recent success of turbo codes indicates that performance close to the Shannon limit may be achieved. In this thesis, it is showed that many iterative decoding algorithms are special cases of two generic algorithms, the min-sum and sum-product algorithms, which also...

Structured LDPC Codes over Integer Residue Rings

This paper presents a new class of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes over Z2a represented by regular, structured Tanner graphs. These graphs are constructed using Latin squares defined over a multiplicative group of a Galois ring, rather than a finite field. Our approach yields codes for a wide range of code rates and more importantly, codes whose minimum pseudocodeword weights equal their ...
